What is Ear Surgery?
Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is performed to change the position, shape, or size of the ears. Is usually used to address ears that stick out too far from the head or appear too large relative to the head. Cosmetic otoplasty can be performed at any age after the ears have reached their full size, which is usually after the age of five. The goal is to create a more natural shape to the ear while ensuring the ears are balanced and proportionate with the head.
Who is a Good Candidate for Ear Surgery?
Children, teenagers, and adults can benefit from ear surgery. Many people choose this procedure if they have ears that stick out too far from their head, ears that are too large in proportion to their head, or if they are unhappy with the results from a previous ear surgery. Ideal candidates are in good general health, non smokers with a realistic expectations. The best way to determine if ear surgery is right for you is through a consultation with one of our plastic surgeons.

Ear Surgery Process
The specific technique that is used to perform your ear surgery may differ depending on the area of concern. To correct protruding ears, incisions are generally made on the back surface of the ear. However, incisions may also be necessary on the front of the ear and are made within the folds to hide scarring. Through these incisions, excess cartilage and skin may be removed, and the cartilage of the ear will be folded into the proper position and secured with internal stitches.
Recovery Process
Ear Surgery Recovery
4-6 weeks
Your ears will be bandaged following ear surgery for support and protection. Some soreness and itching may occur, and this will subside with time. It is important that you keep pressure off of your ears by sleeping on your back for several weeks after surgery.
