You should not drive if you are taking any pain medications after ear surgery.

It is best to sleep or rest on your back with your head elevated for the first week after your ear surgery.

Patients can typically resume normal exercise, about 4 weeks after otoplasty. You should always wait until your plastic surgeon clears you to do so.

Dizziness should not last more than a few days after surgery. Often, it is the scopolamine patch that you are wearing to prevent nausea that is causing the dizziness. If you are having issues, remove the patch and immediately wash your hands.

Recovery from ear surgery typically takes a few weeks. We typically recommend patients take 1 week off from work as they will have to wear a special headwrap dressing. After that they will need to make sure to protect the surgical incisions from sun exposure.

Most otoplasty procedures can be completed in two hours or less.

It is important to protect the ears after surgery. Wearing a headband that keeps the ears in place is a good idea. Especially when sleeping, the ear has a tendency to get folded over. If you recently had your prominent ears corrected, and the ear get flipped over, it can ruin the results.

There are two main reasons your ears stick out. The first is that there is simply too much cartilage. The second is that the fold in the ear that typically keeps the ear back against the head either fails to form or forms poorly. And sometimes both! The good news is that regardless of the cause, an ear that sticks out can most often be corrected with short, safe surgery.

Ears that stick out or prominent ears, are usually the result of a cartilage problem. Once the problem is fixed with surgery, it is important to protect the repair for at least six weeks. Trauma or even folding the ear over on itself can undo the results of surgery. Once the ears are healed, the results are typically permanent.

Rarely will insurance cover otoplasty. Most often, this is a self pay procedure. There are very reasonable financing options if that helps.
