BEHIND THE SCENES
with Dr.Mahabir
Tucson always had a special place in his heart, as he felt drawn to the mountains, lush desert landscape and sense of community that the city brings.
Dr. Mahabir values spending time in nature to help him unwind and recharge. He is a former competitive road cyclist and has cycled the El Tour de Tucson multiple times, and especially loves climbing rides up Mt Lemmon and Mt Graham. In his free time, Dr. Mahabir loves spending time with his family, and watching his daughter grow and experience joy. One of his favorite weekend activities is hiking the Saguaro Vista Trail loop in the Sweetwater Preserve with the family doberman, Nestle. When not outdoors, he loves to read and especially loves sharing his love of books with his daughter. His all time favorite book is “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupery.
Education and Training
Originally from Canada, Dr. Mahabir completed a five-year integrated and accredited Plastic Surgery Residency at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Dr. Mahabir simultaneously earned a master’s degree with a focus on postoperative pain control. To ensure he would be able to offer his patients unsurpassed care, he completed fellowships at the University of Las Vegas in Aesthetic Surgery, Breast Surgery, and Microsurgery.
Dr. Mahabir chose to pursue an academic career after the completion of his training. The first stage of his practice was at Baylor Scott and White in Texas. While there, his practice focused on complex breast, body, and facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. He quickly built a reputation as a caring physician with impressive outcomes. His contributions to education, which twice earned him the teacher of the year award, and research endeavors (over 100 publications, dozens of book chapters, and hundreds of presentations nationally and internationally) eventually led the Mayo Clinic to hire him to be the Chair of Plastic Surgery in Arizona. While at Mayo Clinic, Dr. Mahabir was promoted to full professor and received numerous academic awards.

Dr. Mahabir’s Specialties
For his extra training in Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Mahabir dedicated himself to refining his facial rejuvenation techniques. It gave him the time to master state-of-the-art techniques in both surgical and non-surgical facial rejuvenation and skin care. “My goal is to ensure patients look like a refreshed version of themselves. I take a very individualized approach with each patient and create a custom plan to address their facial aging concerns,” states Dr. Mahabir. A modern facelift involves the perfect balance between lifting the deeper facial muscles, restoring volume loss and skin laxity, and addressing age related skin surface changes such as pigmentation and fine lines, he adds. Almost two decades later, Dr. Mahabir’s national reputation as a cosmetic facial surgeon has been built on his ability to achieve natural, authentic results and a more refreshed look for his patients without being “overdone”.
Dr. Mahabir has a particular interest in cosmetic and aesthetic breast surgery. His passion for helping breast cancer patients regain a sense of wholeness following mastectomy led him to spend time in Washington, D.C. where he was part of the team that successfully had the “Breast Cancer Patient Education Act” signed into law in 2015. In Arizona, he helped write, champion and pass the law on Breast Implant Illness that ensures women have all the information needed to make informed decisions about implants. Whether it is your first breast augmentation or a very complex, challenging breast implant revision or explant, Dr. Mahabir has the vast experience needed to ensure you obtain the result you are looking for.
DIEP (deep inferior epigastric artery perforator) flap surgery involves doing a tummy tuck, taking the extra tissue and carving/sculpting it into a breast and transplanting it to the breast to restore what cancer has taken away. Dr. Mahabir’s vast experience with the DIEP flap has given him a unique, artistic and anatomic insight into both mommy makeovers and tummy tucks. He applies this same artistic sculpting to brachioplasty, thigh lifts and liposuction/liposculpture.
