What are Symmetry Procedures?

Symmetry procedures are often performed following mastectomy, lumpectomy, or BREAST RECONSTRUCTION that has resulted in asymmetry between the breasts. Women who have had a unilateral mastectomy with reconstruction, or require radiation treatment are particularly at risk for needing a symmetry procedure in the future.

Our goal is to restore breast symmetry at the time of breast cancer removal and maintain it over time as the tissues age. Symmetry procedures may involve the use of breast implants, fat transfer, breast lift or reduction to adjust the breasts to match in size and appearance for an improved sense of well-being.

Feel Whole Again

Who is a good candidate for Symmetry Procedures?

Individuals who have undergone a mastectomy, lumpectomy, or breast reconstruction and are unhappy with the asymmetry of their breasts can benefit from a symmetry procedure. The best way to determine if a breast symmetry procedure is right for you, is to schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons.

Symmetry Procedure Steps

There are a number of breast symmetry procedures available, including:

Breast Reduction

BREAST REDUCTION can be performed on the cancer-free breast to help it to best match the appearance of the reconstructed breast. During a breast reduction, excess breast tissue, skin, and fat are removed, and the breast is reshaped. Incision placement may vary depending on the amount of reduction desired.

Breast Augmentation

BREAST AUGMENTATION can be achieved using your own natural tissue or with breast implants. Each individual symmetry procedure is unique, and you can talk with your plastic surgeon to create the best plan for you. If you choose to have NATURAL TISSUE RECONSTRUCTION and desire larger breasts, you can discuss the transplant procedures that will offer you the most tissue, such as the DIEP flap procedure. If you are interested in breast implants for augmentation, you can choose from silicone or saline implants. Saline implants are filled with saltwater and feel firmer than natural breasts, while silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel, and often feel more like natural breast tissue.

Breast Lift

When only one breast is reconstructed, the other breast may not match the “new” one. When this occurs, a BREAST LIFT can help to balance the appearance of the breasts. During this procedure, an incision is created around the areola and extends vertically toward the natural crease under the breast. The excess skin around the nipple will be removed, and the breast reshaped. This results in perkier, more even breasts.

Fat Grafting

FAT GRAFTING is often used during the second stage of breast reconstruction to adjust the final appearance of the breasts. During this procedure, fat is harvested using LIPOSUCTION from an area of the body, and then transferred into the breast to correct a contour issue or add volume. This results in less dimpling, indentations, or curves in the breast, resulting in improved symmetry.

Recovery Process

Symmetry Recovery Procedure

4-6 Weeks

Following your symmetry procedure, bruising and swelling are common. Downtime may vary depending on the extent of your procedure. Your plastic surgeon will speak with you regarding how to best care for your surgery site(s), as well as how to correctly take your medications, and what signs to look out for that may indicate complications or infection. Do not hesitate to contact our office if you have any post-procedure questions or concerns.
