What is Nipple and Areola Surgery?

Nipple and areola surgery is done to correct long, droopy nipples or enlarged, puffy areola due to genetics, trauma, aging, or breastfeeding. While long or enlarged nipples are not life-threatening, many people are unhappy with their appearance. Nipple and areola surgery can reduce the size of the nipples and areola for a boost in self-confidence.

Who is a Good Candidate for Nipple and Areola Surgery?

Individuals who are insecure or unhappy with the size of their nipples, the areola surrounding them, or both can often benefit from nipple and areola surgery. The best way to determine if this treatment is right for you is through a consultation with one of our plastic surgeons at our Tucson office. During your consultation appointment, you will discuss your aesthetic goals with your surgeon, as well as ask any questions regarding the procedure that you may have. Nipple and Areola Procedure

Because each individual patient may desire different outcomes from their nipple and areola surgery, the exact procedure process may vary from person to person. No two surgeries are exactly alike, which is why our board-certified plastic surgeons will take the time to speak with you regarding your unique case and individual aesthetic goals for the best possible results.

In order to reduce the size of the nipples, a small incision will be made on the nipple itself. For areola reduction, an incision is made around the perimeter of the areola. Through the incision, excess tissue will be removed. Permanent sutures will then be closed and the incision closed.

Recovery Process

Nipple and Areola Surgery Recovery

1-2 weeks

Following this procedure, you may experience swelling, temporary numbness, and bruising, which should lessen over the next two weeks. Some patients also experience some tingling in the nipple-areola complex following surgery, which should go away within six weeks. It is important that you sleep on your back for the first week after surgery, and a special surgical bra may also need to be worn. Most patients can return to work or school within a day of surgery but should avoid strenuous exercise for 2-3 weeks.

Your plastic surgeon will provide you with specific instructions regarding the best way to care for your surgical site and take any prescribed medication for the best outcomes. Results from nipple and areola surgery are permanent, so you can enjoy your results for years to come.
