What are Tuberous Breasts?
Tuberous breasts are caused when breast tissue does not proliferate properly during puberty. While this condition is not threatening to your health, it may cause emotional distress or self-consciousness to those who suffer from it. Common symptoms of this condition include:
- Breasts are lacking in breast tissue in both vertical and horizontal directions.
- Breasts tend to have a gap more than 1.5 inches between them.
- The skin surrounding the nipple may look constricted.
- The dark area of the areola may be enlarged.
- The breasts may appear to be oval, pointed, or square-shaped.
While is it not know what exactly causes tuberous breasts, it may result from something that happens in utero. This condition usually becomes noticeable during puberty.

BEFORE & AFTER GALLERYTuberous Breast Surgery Procedure
Tuberous breast surgery, depending on the severity may require one versus two stages to address and correct the underlying breast deformity. In mild cases, a single procedure can be performed at which time the underling constricted breast tissue is released or removed and a breast implant is placed to create the desired breast shape and volume. In more severe cases, two stages may be needed to first address the constricted tissue and place a tissue expander so that the breast tissue can be gradually stretched over time to allow for a better final implant pocket. After this the tissue expander is removed and the implant is placed.
Recovery Process
Tuberous Breast Surgery Recovery
4-6 weeks
Following tuberous breast surgery, you may be asked to wear a special surgical bra to support your new breasts. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are normal, and will dissipate after a few weeks. As with any type of breast surgery, everyday activities will be limited for some time to ensure a complication-free recovery period. Your plastic surgeon will provide you with instructions about how to care for your incisions and properly take any pain medication that is prescribed to you. If you have any concerns or questions post-procedure, do not hesitate to contact our office.
