What is Revision Reconstruction?
Every individual who undergoes a mastectomy has the right to feel comfortable with her results. Revision surgery is done to correct problems that occurred during or after breast reconstruction that negatively impact your everyday life and/or health. This procedure may be needed due to poor cosmetic results from a prior mastectomy, complications that developed over time, or if you are unhappy with the results of your reconstruction surgery.
Some symptoms that may be associated with a complication following breast reconstruction include:
- Increased tightness of the reconstructed breast.
- Breast pain.
- Changes in the size, shape, or position of the breast.
- A lump or firmness in the breast.
Corrective surgery can be performed soon after your initial breast reconstruction, or even years later. It all depends on your individual situation and preferences. However, it is important that patients understand that radiation or chemotherapy will need to be completed before revision surgery is performed.
